The stories take place in an enchanted forest in which a giant magical tree grows. The tree is so tall that its upper branches reach the clouds, and it is wide enough to accommodate the small houses carved into its trunk. The forest and tree are found by three children named Joe, Bessie and Fanny, who move into a house nearby. They then go on an adventure to the top of the tree.
