Sixteen-year-old Gwendolyn isn't exactly your typical girl to begin with: she comes from an aristocratic family, lives in a huge London mansion, goes to an elite school, and sees ghosts... But there are actually quite a few people like that. However, when an unknown force starts randomly hurling her from one era to another, that’s when she becomes truly unique.
It wasn't supposed to be Gwendolyn who became the time traveler, but her cousin. Her cousin was the one being trained for this her entire life, while Gwendolyn is a complete novice: she can't speak French, dance the minuet, fence, or discuss the colonial politics of the 18th century.
Everyone in her family knows about the existence of the time-travel gene and determines in advance who will inherit it, but for some reason, there was a glitch this time, and it's Gwendolyn who has to deal with the consequences. She is the one who will have to uncover conspiracies of the present and the past in the name of saving humanity. Instead of binge-watching shows with her best friend after school, Gwendolyn is doomed to do her homework in the safe dungeons of bygone centuries every day. And she's the one who has to figure out her feelings for the handsome fellow time traveler just like her (there have to be some perks, right?)...
The book is well-translated and easy to read; the interesting plot is accompanied by teenage angst, humor, and beautiful outfits from different eras.
