Three children go to stay with their aunt in the countryside and there, as is usually the case, they meet a real-life witch. This witch is unconventional: she pretends to be a music teacher and only flies on a broomstick at night when no one can see her, and even then, not very confidently. However, she happens to enchant a bed for the children that can fly to any point on Earth. Where would you fly? The children decide to go to a tropical island, where everything starts off perfectly, but then a serious disagreement with the locals occurs.
But the bed is not just a teleporter; it is also a time machine. They can use it to travel to the past, which the children do not hesitate to do, transporting themselves to 17th-century London on the eve of the Great Fire. They are surprised, frightened, and decide not to stay there for long. They return home, but not alone—they have a strange stowaway on board: a hapless black magician who doesn't believe in magic and has ended up in the 20th century.
Vacations, travel, and magic—everything needed for great summer reading for elementary school students can be found in the book "Bed-Knob and Broomstick".
