The cycle of novellas by A. S. Pushkin, “The Tales of the Late Ivan Petrovich Belkin,” is a literary hoax. The author hides behind the name of a fictional landowner, Belkin, who supposedly publishes stories from real life that he has recorded. This device allows Pushkin to create an illusion of reality. The reader believes both the undertaker's mystical tale and the romantic drama in “The Blizzard”; sympathizes with the stationmaster and the characters of “The Shot”; and follows with interest the romantic collisions in “The Squire's Daughter.”
The text is printed unabridged and is accompanied by notes.
