"Shkodus and Friends: An Unusual Pet" is a comic-style story. An engaging and unusual plot, bright "cartoonish" illustrations, and short snippets of text are just what is needed for early independent reading. Children's books in this format help foster an interest in reading even for those who are not particularly fond of it or are just beginning to appreciate interesting books for independent reading. Shkodus the cat lives in a feline world where all kittens go to school, eat cupcakes, and nap several times a day. Like all children, Shkodus dreams of a pet. One day, he finds a boy in a box on the street and, without hesitation, takes him home. And so begins a story of a strong friendship and the hilariously funny adventures of a cat and a human.
