Alexander Pushkin: The Captain's Daughter

Pushkin's last completed prose work, published on the eve of his death, is also one of the first historical novels (as defined by the author himself) in Russian literature.

With its partially parodic memoir-style narrative from a witness and participant in the events, its realistic depiction of a godforsaken military fortress on the edge of the steppes, its precise historical novelization of the brutal Pugachev Rebellion, and its unashamedly romantic fable in the spirit of Walter Scott featuring a series of implausible plot conflicts—this innovative generic eclecticism makes *The Captain's Daughter* an artistic masterpiece and a brilliant example of Russian prose.
