Alexander Pushkin's poem "Poltava" is a grand historical canvas in which the destinies of a state and personal passions intertwine.
At the center of the narrative is the love of the Ukrainian beauty Maria for the aging Hetman Ivan Mazepa, his betrayal of Tsar Peter I, and his defection to the side of the Swedish King Charles XII. One of the most vivid episodes of the poem is the Battle of Poltava in 1709, which decided the outcome of the Great Northern War and the fate of Russia.
The text is accompanied by illustrations by Vladimir Alexandrovich Serov, which have become a staple of the golden fund of Soviet book graphics.
