A. O. Ishimova's first stories were enthusiastically received by both leading Russian writers and young readers. She presented the history of Russia for children in much the same way that W. Scott told the history of England to English children. The writer had previously studied all sources on Russian history available at the time, primarily N. M. Karamzin's "History of the Russian State." It is rare to find a book on Russian history where accuracy meets such ease and clarity of narrative. Grand princes, tsars and emperors, struggles for power, wars and rebellions — A. O. Ishimova writes about these and much more in one of the best history books for children about Russia. A special feature of this edition is its rich illustrative material, carefully selected from the best museums in Russia and private collections, which will help introduce a child to masterpieces of Russian historical painting.
