The novel "Khmel" (Hops) is the first part of the famous trilogy "Tales of the Taiga People," which brought fame to the Russian Soviet writer Aleksey Cherkasov. The creation of the novel was preceded by an amazing story: a mysterious letter received by Cherkasov in 1941, "written with the letters yat, fita, and izhitsa, in a straight, petrified handwriting," prompted him to meet 136-year-old Grandma Efimiya, who had seen Napoleon in person. Her stories formed the basis of the plot for the first book of the "Tales."
Deep in Siberia, an Old Believer community founded by Elder Filaret is established, where Midshipman Loparev, a participant in the Decembrist revolt who escaped from hard labor, arrives by chance. Strict laws govern the community, and only the strong-spirited can endure life here…
Years pass, generations change, and against the backdrop of the historical cataclysms of the early 20th century, the descendants of the characters from the first part of the novel live out their destinies. Having inherited family traits, many of them have lost the memory of their lineage...
