The work of A. N. Tolstoy is truly multifaceted: he was a master of the historical novel, science fiction prose, and the author of numerous novellas, short stories, and plays. The theme of Russia, its history, and its destiny proved to be key in the writer's work. "The Road to Calvary" (1921–1941) is a trilogy about the fates of the Russian intelligentsia on the eve of and after the October Revolution (the novels "The Sisters," "1918," and "Gloomy Morning"), with the protagonists of the epic witnessing the most important events of the 20th century. In the author's own words, "The Road to Calvary" is "a journey of the author's conscience through the suffering, hopes, delights, falls, despondency, and triumphs — a feeling of a whole vast era, beginning with the prelude to the First World War and ending with the first day of the Second World War."
