Alexey Tolstoy: Prince Serebrenni

The novel, which underwent three reprints during the author's lifetime and was translated into five languages, is a poignant statement on the horrors of tyranny, on loyalty to ideals, to one's word — and to one's own heart. The year is 1565. A young voivode, Prince Nikita Serebryany, returns from the Livonian War and encounters the outrages of the Oprichnina, which took hold in the state during his absence. Unable to believe that such cruelty is occurring with the tsar's connivance, he sets off for Alexandrovskaya Sloboda to appear before Ivan the Terrible himself... But first, the prince receives more bitter news: his beloved has become another man's wife. The text is provided with notes by V. I. Kuleshov, a philologist and professor emeritus of Lomonosov Moscow State University.
