Not every author manages to create a literary character whose name becomes a household word. The French writer Alphonse Daudet succeeded. The hero of his trilogy - Tartarin of Tarascon, a cowardly, boastful, and indomitably cheerful adventurer who combines the traits of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, made Daudet famous throughout Europe.
"Tartarin of Tarascon," published in 1869, brought Alphonse Daudet huge and well-deserved success. At first glance, the "Adventures of Tartarin" are remarkable only for their unsurpassed humor. A. Daudet depicted the real life of a provincial town, whose inhabitants "hunt for caps," play cards, sing forgotten romances, gossip, and fantasize; for them, the arrival of a menagerie is an entire event, remembered for a lifetime. Tartarin is flesh and blood of these good-natured, dull, and self-absorbed townsfolk. However, he surpassed them all in his fantasizing.
