The "Children of the Arbat" trilogy recounts a bitter chapter in Russia's history—the era known as the "period of the personality cult." The characters in the trilogy range from ordinary young men and women from Moscow's Arbat district to the highest echelons of power—Stalin and his inner circle, as well as laborers and heads of research institutions and major construction projects. Work on the Arbat trilogy, which Rybakov considered the most important achievement of his life, began back in the mid-1950s. "A mighty, powerful work of Shakespearean force," L. Anninsky said of "Children of the Arbat." The set includes 3 books: "Children of the Arbat," "Fear," and "Dust and Ashes."
