On Christmas Eve, something incredible happened in the Wagner family. It is recounted by ten-year-old Bertil. He lives with his mom (his parents are divorced) and his incredibly curious older sister, Kiki, who also happens to be a convincing liar.
Bertil is a skeptic; he doesn't believe in Christmas miracles. But when a moose crashed through the roof and ceiling into their house, he had to drastically change his mind.
It turns out that the sleigh Santa Claus uses to deliver holiday gifts is tested every year by moose, and only after a thorough inspection are the reindeer harnessed to it. That is the kind of moose that unexpectedly became the Wagners' guest. And all because the sleigh's runners were loose, sending him into a nosedive.
The appearance of this unusual guest triggered a chain of unforeseen and sometimes funny events. Obviously, such a guest had to be kept away from curious neighbors. That is easier said than done. The children show remarkable ingenuity to keep the secret, especially when it comes to Mom's best friend and feminist Gerlinde, or Paninek, a farmer and hunter who can smell game from a mile away, not to mention Grandma, who is terrified of large animals and has come to stay for Christmas.
Mr. Moose is exceptionally wonderful. He is courteous, intelligent, a great storyteller, and a sensitive friend. By the time he crashed into the Wagner house, the moose had flown over many countries, seen many interesting things, and spoke five languages fluently. The sudden appearance of Santa Claus, who showed up to retrieve his moose, left Bertil and the entire Wagner family in shock, and then in despair. They all wished the extraordinary moose could stay with them forever.
But what would Santa Claus do without Mr. Moose?
