Vera and Lucas are growing up on opposite sides of the world. Life is very different in Kamchatka and in Chile, but the ache of loneliness feels the same everywhere. And if you send out signals persistently and for long enough, one day a miracle might happen.
In the evening, my mother and I go down to the shore of the ocean. I stand by the water and imagine—if only I had a friend out there, beyond the edge of the world. I take a flashlight out of my jacket pocket and shine it into the darkness over the sea. A short flash, two long ones, then another short one: dot-dash-dash-dot. Two dots, dot-dash-dash, dot, dash. In Morse code, this means: "hello." I blink into the darkness: "Hello, my name is Vera. Hello, my name is Vera."
