Anna Sewell was a British author who achieved worldwide fame for her only work, the novel "Black Beauty." She once wrote of it: "I have written a small story to induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding treatment of horses." This incredibly moving story of a horse, told in her own words and full of dramatic events, remains one of the bestsellers of world literature to this day.
Black Beauty's life began cloudlessly: he was fortunate to be born to caring owners and to spend his childhood in a field next to his beloved mother. Having grown up and become strong, he came to live with the Gordon family, where he met his first friends who told him about human cruelty. A few years later, he experienced that cruelty himself. Due to the negligence of some owners, and working almost to the point of exhaustion, Black Beauty turned into an ordinary cab horse.
In Anna Sewell's novel, the animal finds its own voice, telling people in the first person how to properly treat animals. His story proves that all horses are living creatures just like us, and they have feelings too.
