Anton Chekhov: The Man in a Case. Selected Works

A wonderful stylist, a keen psychologist, and a master of subtext, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov had a huge influence on the development of world literature. He was always interested in ordinary people in their daily affairs and cares; he told of their lives, dreams, and hopes for the future without preaching or moralizing, leaving his readers to draw their own conclusions. The short stories and plays written in the last quarter of the 19th century still generate interest all over the world, and novelists and playwrights acknowledge that it was Chekhov who opened up unprecedented possibilities in the art of the written word for them.
"Reading Chekhov, I laugh, I rejoice, I admire... That is the definition of talent" (L. N. Tolstoy).

"I wholeheartedly advise you to take a look at Chekhov's books more often... so that, losing yourself, you may experience these fairy-tale dreams as they were intended" (V. V. Nabokov).

"One can revere Tolstoy's intellect. Admire Pushkin's elegance. Value Dostoevsky's moral search. Gogol's humor. And so on. However, the only one I want to be like is Chekhov" (Sergei Dovlatov).
