"The Black Hen, or The Underground Inhabitants" is an extraordinary, enchanting story that Antony Pogorelsky (a pseudonym of Alexei Alexeyevich Perovsky) wrote for his dearly beloved nephew Alyosha – the future famous writer Alexei Tolstoy. It is the first work in the history of Russian literature written specifically for children.
The boy Alyosha studies at a St. Petersburg boarding school. During the holidays, his school friends leave for their homes, and he is left alone. That is when amazing and incredible things begin to happen to Alyosha.
The illustrations for the book were drawn by the contemporary artist Tatyana Safonova. For this book, Tatyana Safonova became a laureate of the International Competition for Book Illustration and Design – "The Image of the Book" in the "New Names" category.
