Boris Vasilyevich Bedny was a Soviet writer, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, and a lecturer at the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute, where he led seminars for the Higher Literary Courses (his students included many renowned writers, such as Chingiz Aitmatov). Boris Bedny achieved fame for his novella "The Girls" (Devchata), which was translated into fifteen foreign languages and served as the basis for the film of the same name. Everyone in Russia is well acquainted with the film "The Girls," directed by Yuri Chulyukin and starring Nadezhda Rumyantseva. The cheerful comedy about love in a remote Ural logging settlement not only captivated audiences across the Soviet Union but also won several prestigious awards at international film festivals. However, the novella "The Girls" differs from the famous film in many ways: the characters' personalities are explored more deeply, the harsh life in the distant settlement is depicted much more realistically, and there are even significant differences in the plot.
In addition to the novella "The Girls," Boris Bedny wrote many short stories (some of which were adapted for the screen) as well as the novella "The Great Stream" (1952). This edition includes the complete collection of works by this remarkable classic of Russian prose.
