"The Citadel" - perhaps the most famous book by Cronin, this is a wonderful topical novel-parable about the life path of a person from his formation and development to the decay and decline of the individual under the yoke of harsh reality.
Andrew Manson comes to his first internship with a noble goal: to help as many people as possible. He sincerely wants to become one of those who can truly glorify medicine. It all starts small, but Andrew does not back down in the face of difficulties: in a provincial town, a young man is listed as a doctor's assistant, but in fact he himself is a doctor. Such is life and Andrew rises to the challenge!
Little by little, changing one hospital after another, Andrew makes a dizzying career. However, behind the ups at one point it becomes difficult to find oneself. A successful doctor is now much less likely to ask global questions about how to change the medical system.
