Daniel Speck is a master of engaging family dramas with roots deep in the past. His new novel is no exception, though in this story the drama unfolds not during the Second World War, but in the blessed era of the "flower children."
Berlin yoga teacher Lucie has never been to India, despite her profession. Her beloved father, Lou, has long been firmly stuck in the past—in the rock music of the 1960s and 70s—while her mother, Corinna, is a star TV journalist with a brilliant career. One day, Corinna disappears, and a worried Lucie and Lou begin a search that leads them to the famous Indian city of Rishikesh, a sacred place that was of immense importance to hippies in the late 1960s and has since become, in essence, the world capital of yoga.
In 1968, Lou, his younger brother Mark, and two young women set off on a journey along the "hippie trail" to the famous ashram of Guru Maharishi, where the Beatles and their entourage also arrived. In the ashram, the four young Germans found themselves at the very heart of a global transcendental spiritual revolution, which would result in drama for them personally.
Speck's novel is a love story, a family history, a spiritual journey, and a surprisingly vivid portrait of the hippie era.
