Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) was a great poet and humanist, a staunch advocate for the unification of Italy and one of the founders of the modern Italian language, a patriot and, as often happens in times of change, an exile. His influence on world literature, and on culture as a whole, is difficult to overestimate.
The immortal "Divine Comedy," which recreates an entire Universe; the intimate "story" of first love, "Vita Nuova," imbued with profound lyricism; and emotional sonnets-missives – all the works presented in this book are united by themes of love, friendship, and the soul’s journey toward light and renewal. But the key connecting link between them remains, of course, their protagonist – Dante himself.
