Dina Rubina's novel is an unexpected, virtuosic somersault "under the big top of literature," an absolute transformation of the writer's style, her habitual intonation, and her circle of themes.
The fates of the novel's characters are whimsical; love and crime, talent and passion—capable of destroying a personality or elevating it to the heights of creativity—are intertwined in a "high-voltage" plot.
Open this novel, and you will be captivated by a truly Babylonian confusion of characters: urban madmen and alcoholics, Russian nobles, exiles and ex-convicts, "white colonizers," and "hashish hunters"…
