This story began in 1971, when Douglas Adams was hitchhiking across Europe with a copy of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to Europe." While lying in a field in Austria and looking up at the stars, the writer thought it would be a good idea to write a hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. This is the story Douglas Adams himself tells, though no one knows how it really happened. However, now everyone knows the hapless Englishman Arthur Dent, his friend Ford Prefect, the depressed robot Marvin, and the other characters from "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series. "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," having started as a BBC radio play, was a tremendous success. The novel of the same name topped the British bestseller list in 1984, and Adams himself became the youngest writer to receive the "Golden Pen" award, presented for selling 1 million books.
