Since its first publication in the 1820s–1840s, James Fenimore Cooper's pentalogy about Nathaniel Bumppo (also known by the nicknames Deerslayer, Hawkeye, Pathfinder, La Longue Carabine, and Leatherstocking) has enjoyed enduring global success as a benchmark of captivating adventure fiction, whose plots and characters capture the reader's imagination once and for all. A skilled hunter and brave warrior, a selfless defender of the weak and oppressed, Leatherstocking has long since firmly entered the pantheon of the most popular heroes in world literature.
This volume includes the first three novels of the cycle, recounting the youth and mature years of Nathaniel's life, his friendship with the Delaware Indian Chingachgook, their skirmishes with the Hurons in the forest wilderness and on the surface of the lakes, the mortal risks the friends take to rescue Chingachgook's beloved from captivity, to protect the Hutter family ("The Deerslayer"), and to save the daughters of the British Colonel Munro ("The Last of the Mohicans"), as well as the protagonist's love for the daughter of his old friend, Sergeant Thomas Dunham, and his self-sacrifice for the sake of another's happiness ("The Pathfinder"). The complete text of "The Deerslayer" is published, and all authorial prefaces and notes to the novels and their later lifetime editions have been restored. The book reproduces the complete sets of illustrations for Cooper's novels created by English artists brothers Henry Matthew Brock and Charles Edmund Brock.
