To change one's life in an instant… To forget all troubles, overcome challenges, and race toward happiness by the shortest and easiest path… This is what the orphan Tim Thaler dreams of. He finds life with his stepmother and malicious stepbrother unbearable. Only his Sunday trips to the racetrack brighten up the hero's daily routine. It is there, in a state of utter desperation, that the fourteen-year-old protagonist meets Baron Lefuet, who offers a magical escape from all his misfortunes. Tim Thaler will win every wager – if he agrees to a symbolic exchange: the boy only needs to give Lefuet his laughter – only a true fool would refuse such a deal!..
