Jack London realized early on how hard and unfair fate can be. As a schoolboy, he sold newspapers, worked as a cleaner, worked part-time where he could - the family was in need. At the age of fourteen he went to work in a canning factory. He got oysters, worked in a laundry and in a jute factory. He experienced the consequences of the gold rush: he fell ill with scurvy. But a trip to Alaska gave him meetings with the heroes of future books that made London a famous writer.
