Gerald Durrell (1925-1995) was a famous English zoologist, explorer, and one of the iconic figures of the 20th century. Durrell's books have long been considered classics of world literature and are highly popular with readers around the globe.
The works included in this volume ("Three Singles to Adventure," "Three Singles to Adventure") recount Durrell's expeditions to South America. There, the great animal collector and his team searched for rare beasts and birds. According to Durrell, there is a common misconception that catching animals is the hardest part of a collector's job. But in reality, the true work begins once the animal has been captured. Ensuring the animals receive proper nutrition and, most importantly, transporting them to a zoo is often a very difficult task. However, Durrell never hid the fact that for the sake of his beloved work—often dangerous and troublesome, but never dull—he was willing to take risks and endure all sorts of hardships.
The author writes about his impressions of South America, its fantastic nature, his encounters with new animals, their habits, and the amusing and sometimes very touching interactions with them with unchanging love, impeccable precision, and inimitable humor.
