Edogawa Ranpo is the founder of the detective genre in 20th-century Japanese literature, having borrowed techniques from the genre's classics: Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie. Much like Edgar Allan Poe, to whom the author owes his literary pseudonym, Edogawa Ranpo has works that make room for the irrational and the horrific. The protagonist of many of the author's works, detective Kogoro Akechi, defined the primary method that aids his work as follows: "To solve a crime, one does not need baffling riddles or ingenious machines… one must know how to devise the question." This seemingly simple method has made many literary investigators famous alongside their creators, and we can confidently add Kogoro Akechi and Edogawa Ranpo to that list.
The author succeeds in constructing a non-trivial intrigue. To guess the criminal before the detective, you will have to rack your brain, which is why this work will especially appeal to the thoughtful reader.
