“Down the Magic River” is a witty, cheerful tale by Eduard Uspensky based on Russian fairy tales. Mitya, an ordinary schoolboy, arrives at his grandmother's village for the summer and ends up in the Faraway Kingdom. All the characters we know from childhood are there: Zmey Gorynych eats people, and Baba Yaga might eat you too, though she mostly welcomes princes, feeding them, giving them drink, and tucking them in to sleep. Koschei the Deathless is made entirely of iron and has spent two hundred years hanging on chains in a basement. But then an opportunity presents itself: Tsar Makar decides to retire. So, the “loyal” royal servants suggest that Koschei take the throne. And a change of power is rarely peaceful.
