Elizabeth Gaskell is a celebrated Victorian-era author, ranked alongside Charles Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray, and Charlotte Brontë as one of the brilliant constellation of 19th-century English novelists. Gaskell’s works, which tell of complex human fates, the power of love, and spiritual quests, were highly praised by the aforementioned Dickens, who published them in his magazine. Unfortunately, in Russia, the writer's work has not gained as much popularity as it has in the rest of the world. To date, only two of her novels have been translated into Russian: "Mary Barton" and "Cranford." This edition presents the first Russian publication of Elizabeth Gaskell’s novel "North and South" — a love story told in the best traditions of Victorian literature. Until now, fans of Elizabeth Gaskell's work in Russia have only been able to encounter this story through the magnificent 2004 BBC adaptation. The protagonist, Margaret Hale, a native of Southern England, is forced to move to the industrial north. The impressionable young woman is deeply outraged by the terrible conditions in which the workers live, yet her resentment toward mill owner John Thornton inadvertently blossoms into tender feelings. Throughout the novel, the characters must overcome numerous prejudices, learn to see the world more broadly and fully, moving beyond black-and-white perspectives and divisions between North and South, all while learning kindness and humanity.
