The book "The Little Man" (1963) has long been a classic in Germany. For half a century, generation after generation of children have been rereading it. The secret lies in its unique tone and humor. And the plot is so fast-paced that it seems as if there wasn't a single dull day back then: circus performers kept coming up with more and more fantastic shows, newspapers announced one sensation after another, and gangsters wove elaborate plots to the delight of brave detectives. He was called the Little Man, and he slept in a matchbox. Though, of course, he had a perfectly ordinary human name: Max Pichelsteiner, or just Maxie. No one would have ever known about him—in fact, no one would have even noticed him!—but chance led him to Mr. Hokus von Pokus's circus and made him the partner of the great magician. Their joint act turned Hokus and Maxie into true stars. However, the story soon took an unexpected and, one might say, detective-like turn.
