You have seen Evgeny Feldman's photographs, even if you do not know who took them. A panorama of the rally at Bolotnaya Square, Alexei Navalny with a cup of instant noodles and on his way to the CEC, clashes with the "Berkut" on the Maidan, the "parade of captives" in Donetsk, the human chain in Minsk — an entire era fits within Feldman's frames, and no one else witnessed so many of its key events from such a close distance.
In just a few years, a teenager who went to punk concerts with a point-and-shoot camera became Russia's most famous documentarian — and the country descended into brutal repression and full-scale war. To honestly show the main stages of this journey, Feldman risked his life and defied prohibitions many times. Therefore, the book in which he tells the story of his work reads simultaneously as both a tragedy and an adventure novel.
