Evgeniya Ovchinnikova is a writer and screenwriter. She writes suspenseful detective thrillers, but "Treasures" is her first book "for joy," without eerie mysteries or investigations. The manuscript was a finalist in the "Kniguru" competition and a winner of the "Belaya Vorona" literary contest.
The book is about the unique moments of childhood happiness. Asya, a girl of about ten, spends the summer in the countryside with her aunt's family. The setting is the late 1990s in Kazakhstan. Asya is the youngest, and her cousins look down on her, though they sometimes reluctantly bring her along for village amusements: to the disco, the river, or on a berry-picking trip to a former collective farm field. Asya's mother works in the city and visits rarely. Asya's life is filled with typical summer events, adventures, and challenges. Riding a bike, swimming in the river, battling a turkey that blocks access to the garden toilet, watching a movie with other children, and making her first friends her own age. And she also has her own secret—treasures, a "little secret" that she hides from everyone in the garden.
