“Demons” is one of the most important novels by Fyodor Dostoevsky. By the time he had already written “The House of the Dead,” “Notes from Underground,” “Crime and Punishment,” and “The Idiot,” Dostoevsky still felt a keen sense of dissatisfaction and, by his own admission, was only just approaching his masterpiece, before which his “entire previous literary career was merely trash and an introduction.” In the process of agonizingly complex work on the manuscript, a topical book directed against Russian nihilism grew into a large-scale tragedy of a novel, in which new philosophical, moral, and historical meanings are still being discovered today.
