“The Metamorphosis” is one of the few works by Kafka published during his lifetime. However, the novella became truly iconic only after the author's death: its imagery and motifs continue to inspire writers, directors, and musicians to this day, and the expression “Kafkaesque nightmare” has entered the dictionary.

One day, a simple traveling salesman, Gregor Samsa, wakes up to find that he has transformed into an insect. He thinks that life will remain the same: he will continue to work, support his family, and pay off his father’s debts. But with each passing day, Gregor becomes more of a burden, the house turns into a cage, and his loved ones turn into his judges.

At the end of his life, Kafka left instructions for his unpublished works to be destroyed, but against the wishes of the deceased, his friend Max Brod saved and published them. Kafka’s texts laid the foundation for the literature of the absurd. In these unsettling stories, the fantastic is woven into reality, and events unfold contrary to conventional logic. Kafka’s works are difficult to interpret and remain a subject of literary debate.
