The debut novel by young Italian author Francesca Giannone, which has become a literary sensation in Italy. Based on the story of the author’s great-grandmother, the novel recounts the life of Anna, a young woman from northern Italy who, in 1934, moved with her family to the south, her husband’s homeland. Becoming the first female postman in Lizzanello, Anna challenges the patriarchal norms of the society. For over 20 years, first on foot and then by bicycle, she delivered important correspondence to the residents—letters from soldiers at the front, postcards from those who had left Italy forever, and messages from secret lovers. Anna would read the letters to the illiterate and even taught them how to read and write. Without even realizing it, the bold "outsider" from the north would change much in the small southern town and profoundly influence the status of women there.
