Françoise Sagan: Hello sadness!

Françoise Sagan was called the Mademoiselle Chanel of literature. Beginning with her very first novel, "Bonjour Tristesse!" (1954), which caused quite a stir, her literary career developed brilliantly; she created book after book with amazing ease, and they were translated into various languages and flew around the world in millions of copies. Over a long and eventful life, Sagan wrote more than twenty novels, three collections of short stories, nine plays, two biographies, and several collections of memoirs. However, "Bonjour Tristesse!" remains her most famous work—so strong was the impression it made and so profound the influence this book had on French society. The action of the novels included in this collection takes place in Paris and the provinces, as in "A Certain Smile," "Aimez-vous Brahms?," and "Those Without Shadows," on the Mediterranean coast ("Bonjour Tristesse!"), and across the seas and oceans ("Wonderful Clouds"). Her characters fall in love, lie, have fun, and suffer; they spend years chasing happiness, while Sagan, like no one else, understood that it is an elusive and exceptionally unstable substance.
