Belgian artist Gabrielle Vincent (1928-2000) gained worldwide fame for her children's series of picture books about the adventures of a good-natured bear named Ernest and his "adopted daughter," a little mouse named Celestine. Vincent's delicate watercolor illustrations are so expressive that they require almost no words. With light lines and subtle strokes, she manages to convey the slightest shades of emotion and the most delicate feelings—childhood hurt and jealousy, confusion, fear of loneliness, the bitterness of loss, and, of course, love in all its manifestations. A love that is greater than life.
