World fame came to American author Harriet Beecher Stowe after the publication of her novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin." Beecher Stowe vividly depicted the inhumanity of slavery, where a person becomes an object of sale and their life is worth nothing. The characters of the novel—the enslaved Uncle Tom, who submissively meets his fate; the mulatto Harris and his courageous wife Eliza, who escape to Canada; and the planter’s concubine Cassy, who avenges her violated dignity—are extraordinarily vivid and lifelike.
