A Gothic novel by Gaston Leroux, inspired by the recently built Paris Opera House. The story follows a terrifying Phantom rumored to dwell in the building's catacombs, an aspiring vocalist, and the viscount who falls in love with her.
Mysterious events take place at the Paris Opera House: money goes missing, a singer disappears, stage sets collapse, and people die. Rumor has it that it is all the work of a mysterious Phantom... The sudden death of the prima donna Carlotta gives a chance for success to the young and talented understudy and chorus girl, Christine Daaé.
The novel served as the basis for Andrew Lloyd Webber's famous Broadway musical "The Phantom of the Opera".
