H. G. Wells: War of the Worlds

This collection of works by English writer H. G. Wells includes his best science fiction novels, which have become the author’s calling card and classics of "cautionary literature": The Time Machine (1895) – a bleak narrative about life in the year 802,701; The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896) and The Invisible Man (1897) – stories about astonishing experiments conducted by brilliant and mad scientists who audaciously violate the laws of nature, legal prohibitions, and moral standards; and The War of the Worlds (1897) – one of the first books on the theme of alien aggression threatening the existence of humanity, a topic that later became popular in literature and cinema. When the Sleeper Wakes (1898–1899) and The First Men in the Moon (1901) are examples of Wells's social science fiction, in which various negative models of social structure are played out (whether it be the lunar hierarchical "anthill" society governed by the Grand Lunar, or the totalitarian regime established by the White Council on Earth at the end of the 21st century) along with the possibilities for changing them.
