Bruno the bear and his dog Lola are the heroes of 4 picture books created by contemporary Swedish artist Gunilla Ingves. Each book is dedicated to one of the seasons—winter, spring, summer, and autumn—and describes a day in the life of the characters, filled with "seasonal" activities and fun.
In the book "Bruno's Summer," the bear and his dog spend the morning working in the garden: weeding, watering, fertilizing the beds, and mowing the grass. After work, they go to the river, swim, watch water striders and diving beetles, then pick raspberries in the forest and even find a snakeskin on the path. In the evening, the friends host guests and set the table in the garden.
The main story of the book is "framed" by notes from Bruno the bear's observation journal. They contain many sketches and informative facts about the nature of the specific season.
The first journal spread in "Bruno's Summer" is dedicated to gardening: how to properly prepare fertilizer from nettles, where exactly is the best place to mow grass, and why earthworms are needed. The second spread is dedicated to migratory birds, insects, and reptiles that can be found in summer in our region.
The books in the Bruno the bear series can be called a practical encyclopedia of the seasons for children aged 3-6. With gentle pastel illustrations, a multitude of details to examine on every page, and charming main characters.
