Love is a grand emotion. Deeply hidden, forbidden, secret, it will still await its hour. This is what Khaled Hosseini's novel is about. And also about friendship between people who, it would seem, could only be enemies.
Mariam is the illegitimate daughter of a wealthy businessman, who has known what misfortune is since childhood and has felt her own doom from an early age. Layla, by contrast, is a beloved daughter in a close-knit family, dreaming of an interesting and wonderful life. They have nothing in common; they live in different worlds that were never destined to cross, if not for the fiery storm of war. From now on, Layla and Mariam are bound by the closest of ties, and they themselves do not know what they are - enemies, friends, or sisters. But they cannot survive alone, nor can they withstand the medieval despotism and cruelty that have flooded a once-flourishing city.
Khaled Hosseini's novel is unimaginably tragic and irresistibly beautiful, like an Old Testament story.
