Once, misfortune came to the quiet, cozy house where a brother and sister lived: a shard of a magic mirror pierced the boy's heart, and the Snow Queen carried off the now-cold Kai to her kingdom. In search of her brother, Gerda travels half the world: she meets a young prince and princess, ends up in a den of forest robbers, and makes her way into the Snow Queen's castle. The girl will face many obstacles on her path, but Gerda's loyal heart will overcome all hardships.
This is one of Andersen's longest and most popular fairy tales. According to biographer Carole Rosen, the prototype for the cold-hearted Snow Queen was Andersen's unrequited love for the opera singer Jenny Lind.
