"Nightwork" is a light yet deeply profound social novel by the American literary classic Irwin Shaw.
Douglas Grimes is a formerly successful pilot. Due to health problems, he was forced to end his career, and later took a job as a night porter in a cheap hotel. His life was completely devoid of color, and there was no escape from the loneliness, poverty, and boredom, until one day a guest died in the hotel, leaving behind an unclaimed briefcase containing a fabulous sum of money. No one but Douglas and the guest himself knew of the briefcase's existence. But surely the guest had no use for it anymore?
