At forty, Ivan Goncharov, by then a well-known St. Petersburg writer and author of the famous novel "A Common Story," realized that his own life had become "common" as well. Mornings were for official paperwork, evenings for the manuscript of "Oblomov"... Things could not go on like this. And so, the modest office clerk, "timid before a superior’s gaze, afraid of catching a cold," and who left home "only in case of extreme necessity," suddenly recalled his childhood dreams of sea adventures and set off on a voyage around the world on the frigate "Pallada."
Upon returning from his two-year journey, Goncharov published the book "The Frigate Pallada." It is not a scholarly work, but rather an address to friends from an amateur traveler who is interested in everything: weather and economy, architecture and landscapes, new languages and unusual traditions, local cuisine, national costumes... However, the inquisitive tourist remained a talented writer: his powers of observation, humor, and ability to choose the most precise and expressive words never left him for a moment.
This edition features rare drawings by travelers who were Goncharov's contemporaries.
