Turgenev's reflections on the future of Russia and the West, on their historical paths, on progress and civilization, and on a new type of hero of the time—all this is reflected in the novel "Fathers and Sons." The novel's protagonist, the nihilist Bazarov, became a household name for describing revolutionary-minded young people fiercely fighting against the vestiges of the past. The debates between the main character Yevgeny Bazarov, who calls himself a nihilist and rejects common notions of life, art, morality, and human nature, and his antagonist Pavel Kirsanov, an aristocrat to the core, form the central conflict of the novel.
But the plot structure is built more on the internal conflict of Bazarov himself. The hero, who had just been denying everything and everyone, who did not believe in love and laughed at his friend capable of tender feelings, suddenly falls in love passionately and fervently himself.
And everything is suddenly turned upside down—Bazarov cannot cope with love; it proves stronger than his firmest convictions.
