“14 Forest Mice” is a book series, highly popular in Japan and many European countries, about the beauty of everyday life and the experiences of three generations of a mouse family: grandparents, parents, and ten little mice.
In the first book of the series, “14 Forest Mice: Breakfast,” the family members wake up in the morning, some earlier than others. Everyone has their own familiar tasks and roles: six little mice set off to gather fresh berries, while mom, grandma, and the two eldest daughters bake pies. Dad, grandpa, and two little mice prepare mushroom soup. And finally, the table is full of delicious treats, ready for breakfast before starting a new day full of events!
Just a few words—and thousands of details on every page. Iwamura’s books resemble miniature dollhouses where you want to examine and touch every detail, and every small event is filled with a truly Japanese philosophy of appreciating life in every moment.
