“Hadji Murat” is a novella about the tragic fate of a Caucasian national hero. Brave and proud, torn between a sense of duty and the desire to save his family, Hadji Murat finds himself caught between two fires during the Caucasian War. As one of the characters in the novella says, “eagles tear at one, then the other.” The short story “The Prisoner of the Caucasus” is based on the stories of people who survived captivity, as well as Leo Tolstoy’s own experiences while serving in the Caucasus. The protagonist, a Russian officer named Zhilin, is taken captive by Tatars while traveling home from service.
